Reading, Writing and Numeracy
Spalding Method
The Writing Road to Reading Romalda Bishop Spalding (5th Ed.)
This method has been successfully used by millions of children worldwide over 40 years. It is based on the well researched principle that students attain higher cognitive levels when underlying skills are practiced to the point of automaticity. This principle is widely understood in classical music where a pianist must devote considerable effort and time into the technical practice of sales and excercises before embarking on a Beethoven sonata.
This method has been used successfully in the classroom, for special education and ESL students.
It is based on phonemic awareness which is a better predictor of reading success than general intelligence, reading readiness and listening comprehension. Correct letter formation is taught from the begining so that handwriting develops as an automatic skill. Reading, writing, spelling, grammar and comprehension are integrated into a seamless basis for literacy.
